CASE STUDIES
Building a Pipeline
The Long Beach Public Service Corps (LBPSC) fellowship program intends to develop the next generation of public sector professionals, foster economic inclusion, and expand opportunities to youth by developing successful career paths into public service. Fellows work alongside experienced professionals, gained insight into the inner workings of the City, and contribute to meaningful projects. Civic Confidence, was hired to design, implement, and evaluate the program. The inaugural cohort included 50 students, who completed up to 700 hours of paid work.

Sales Strategy
Civic Confidence provided PlaceMakingUS with a sales strategy that involved reviewing their current promotional materials and portfolio of contracts to identify the organization’s value proposition, superpowers, and pillars of work. Part of the engagement was to define clear goals and objectives, their target audience, diversification of revenue streams, and monitoring tools to ensure the organization is on target on their three-year sales strategy. Marketing materials were also developed to facilitate with implementation.

Disrupting the Criminal
Justice System
As the Deputy Director of the City of Long Beach, Innovation Team I concentrated my efforts for three years in focusing on the City’s efforts to transform its criminal justice pipeline into a broader system of justice. The final product was not an online tool or a piece of legislation but rather a way of doing things: a city-wide Justice Lab. The lab was designed to connect high-risk individuals with resources suited to their specific needs, and to connect service providers with the right data to make better decisions for users. Co-Designing a Public Park
From honoring local LGBTQ leaders to the placement of pingpong tables, Harvey Milk Park was co-designed with the public. To do this, an innovative procurement process was used to purchase the park’s outdoor furniture, one that allowed residents to try out tables, chairs, and mobile-device charging stations before the city invested in a purchase. Before construction, a series of activations were used to test our assumptions about what kinds of programming and amenities would most interest residents. All of the testing, and learned insights not only helped Long Beach make smarter decisions but helped local leaders and the community develop the park’s new and refreshed identity.
